Ape Cave Confirmation!

August 5th, Sunday is approaching fairly fast! We need absolute confirmation of who WILL go. Kinda important to know because we need to arrange for cars and seating./

THE PLAN
1. We meet up at my house anytime Sunday before 9. Your excuse can be that we're all seeing a movie at my house. Afterwards, your alibi is up to you; say you're sleeping over at someone's house for example.

2. We leave for Ape Caves at 9 or 10.

3. Arrive there after 2-3 hours of driving.

4. Have fun do whatever.

5.Leave and be back by 5 or 6 I believe.
*Details of when we get back will be decided when we actually get there and figure out what's best.

WHAT TO BRING
We need the following:
-Flashlights and batteries for them
-Lanterns (Electric)
-Comfortable, warm clothing that you are not afraid to get dirty (doesn't mean we will, just a precaution)
-Anything to make you feel comfortable for the long car ride (blanket, music, book, etc)
-Insect Repellent if you have it
-New bottled water

Anything else you think we need? Ask Charlie or me; I probably forgot something.

We're going to go buy snacks so feel free to bring some along with you or mooch off of us. Kitty's also planning to bring a portable gas range so we can even have some hot noodles there.

IMPORTANT: Confirm if you are going or not PLEASE!!! Call Charlie or me.

Aug 19...Ape Caves Excursion?

Hey guys, Charlie H mentioned a really cool place to hang out called the Ape Caves somewhere near Mt. St. Helens. We'll go exploring the caves and it's fairly safe. I'm going to bring really strong flashlights because we're going at night. It's fun to walk through and explore and the night skies are very clear and beautiful - you can see everything including the milky way! However, going at night time is illegal but there is extremely little chance of getting into trouble because many people do this also. It'll be lots of fun, we'll bring a picnic if you guys want while we go star gazing. Charlie and I will be driving separate cars if a lot of people go so there's plenty of room in his van and my car.

Brief rundown:

Where?: Ape Caves near Mt. St. Helens
When?: Sunday, August 19th. Leave at 10PM. Arrive midnight. Go home around 4AM.
What are we doing?: Exploring fun caves, trekking and star gazing because the skies are clear there.
Bring?: Warm clothes, sturdy shoes (no heels Areum), flashlights, food and water

This is illegal, but not a serious offense, they just worry about safety that's all. We'll be safe there and go at a slow pace for everyone. It'll be fun! So if you're willing to take the plunge, contact either me or Charlie. I'm guaranteeing safety by the way.

So I have this delightful little story about my heroic ventures in a land far far away...

Well...actually, this happened only next door in Tacoma and I certainly was no hero, but I like to think it so because it makes my boyish ego grow :)

Two weeks ago, Saturday, I was out with my dad and brother helping my dad's boss' daughter move from a small apartment in Tacoma (near Union Station and the Glass Museum). I was outside, on the bottom floor, waiting for the others to bring down the stuff to put in my dad's van.

My dad parked the van up onto to sidewalk of the hill (if you've been to that area of Tacoma..it's very...very...very hilly) with the van facing downhill. The van's trunk was open and I was sitting on the edge of the bumper, kind of leaning my body on the van.

A gangster looking fella came down the street and I waved a friendly hello. Several minutes pass.

Still waiting..still leaning against the van...

But...suddenly..I'm not leaning anymore and I'm just standing up!..."weird I thought..." So I looked behind me and I my mouth dropped. The van was starting to roll forward! I automatically thought to stop it somehow so I rushed for the van's hitch and grabbed on, pulling with my might (stupid, I know but that was the first thing that came to mind)

I abandoned thinking that my muscular physique would stop the van and started to come around side the van. I began running alongside the van and I finally reached the door handle and opened it, jumped in. No kidding, this is something you would see in the movies! Once I got inside the van, I noticed quickly that the gear was in "R" for Reverse (this is important for later). I stepped on the brakes, pulled the parking brake and parked the car all at the same time. But I was too late...

The van bumped up a curb and half-way ran over a very tall shrub. Now the shrub is crooked, I'll show anyone who won't believe me! XD I sat in the van, catching my breath. Remember the gangster looking guy? He came walking up the sidewalk and saw the whole incident. He asked if I needed a hand but I was so embarrassed and thought I had it under control anyways. He walked off and I reversed the van back to where it was suppose to be. This time, I put the van into PARK. The reason why the van started rolling down the hill on it's own was because the van was in REVERSE and not PARK. The van couldn't hold the reverse anymore and just started rolling forward (same thing happens if you're driving and you accidentally shift your gear from neutral to reverse, the car shuts off and just rolls; i've had this happen to :x) So my dad finally comes down and asks what was going on... Obviously my dad did not park the van. We looked at the front and the license plat is bent on one side; a little memento left by the shrub.

So my dad learned a lesson, never leave your car in reverse on a hill, especially a very long, steep hill. If I had not stopped the van, it would've rolled right over that shrub and went along its merry way, mowing people down, crashing cars...wow...scary thought..Duy saves the day!

I was rewarded with a korean bbq feast (well...it was for helping them move. It was DELICIOUS- treat me out to something like that soon and I'll be a happy fellow)

Ok...I can't stop twitching and bouncing and all this fun thigns because of a substance I drank and it's wonderfull....I must preserve the taste ...the feeling and bliss! ALso, I must note that I cannot drink too much of it or the effect will no longer be as strong when i really need a swig....mmm...I can't write anything poem-ey! Too...antidepressed....THere's an antidepressant in this also...which explains for my involuntary laughter..and twitching...and goofy smiling.....let's see if i can manage a few lines.....fun experiment..feeling this way and writing..vavoom let's go!...

I've been accepted to UW...

I've been accepted to Swarthmore

and University of Chicago..

Waiting for Cornell (I do not care) and Stanford (I do not care doubly) and Pomono (Don't really care much)

What's promising is University of Chicago....Because I like it....

BUT I did no apply for their financial aid...thinking i won't go there..

So I'm stuck between UW and UC...

UW = almost guaranteed money...

UC = dunno about money but by far is better than UW in so many aspects...

I just don't know... and it's hard.

I'm in a pickle of sorts...concerning my college life...

So far...I think I have a shot at the Husky Promise although I don't know much about it. Can anyone direct me to the requirements, information, etc? I would like to have my undergraduate years paid for but then I would have to worry about graduate school...

So here's what I'm packing so far,

-Washington Scholar Scholarship (~$6000 a year for four years at UW)
OR/AND
-Air Force ROTC ($15,000 a year, $750 a quarter for books, $200 starting monthly allowance for personal interests going up to at least $600 by my junior year, all of which for four years.)

The incentives that the Air Force gives me are very enticing...of course, it's the military. But, many doctors have a military career tucked under their belts, reason being that they went through medical school that way. I could very well do the same thing. I could go ROTC undergrad years, then med school, and then serve for a minimum of four years. I don't know if i go to med school first or serve...I'm still getting information before I make my decision.

When I went to my interview at UW ROTC, they showed me a list of scholarships that were ROTC unique. Of which were some very nice medical school scholarships where I'm paid for, full tuition! And they have a certain amount of slots for the scholarship and not many people sign up for it because they don't know it exists. My interviewer could almost guarantee that I could go through medical school for free if I go through ROTC.

Also, being that my main target career field is medical practice, when I go serve in the military, I will probably not be on the front lines but in a medical facility behind the line of fire. Major Jones did confirm this with me. His buddy, now a doctor in another state, was becoming a doctor and was placed in a large Medical Base in Germany. I would probably end up there or somewhere similar, instead of pointing a gun at somebody's head. So I need not worry about fighting in a war...most likely not.

Now, my decision is whether or not I should take the ROTC scholarship. Only 20% of all applicants received the scholarship so I'd be letting go of something very big if I choose not to take it. BUT, I want to find ways to get out of it because the reason I would take it is so that I can get ALL of my school paid for, including medical school in my graduate years...

What do you guys think?

So Saturday was my last drill competition for AFJROTC. How did we do? We bit the dust.

Let me explain how a competition works

-The different types of teams are:
a.) Color Guard (4 man team: two flags and two guards (rifle bearers) <---I am on this one
b.) Unarmed Drill (Drill team without rifles)
c.) Armed Drill (Drill team with rifles) <---I am on this one
d.) Singles and Duals Armed exhibition (A single person of pair who compete in a freestyle exhibition with rifles)
e.) Strength Team (Comprised of a group of cadets who do timed situps, pushups and mile run)
f.) Marksmen (Having to do with shooting the rifle but airforce doesn't compete in this so I'll skip it)

-Unarmed and Armed Drill Teams go through 3 phases:
1.) Inspection - Here, the team is formed up and asked questions about the military, their JROTC detachment, positions, ranks, general knowledge of the government, current world problems, uniform regulation, etc.
2.) Regulation - The drill team is given a specific sequence of movements beforehand and must complete the sequence in front of judges.
3.) Exhibition - The last phase is a freestyle sequence made up by the team. Here, you will see the creative side of the competition; flips, spins, beats, stomps, rifle throwing and catching, ripples, etc.

-Color Guard goes through regulation only.

-Strength Teams do situps, pushups and the mile run to earn points for the team.

-Singles and Dual Armed Exhibitions are freestyle sequences made up for just two or one person to be performed.

Now that that's finished, let's get on to what happened..

MAN! I had to wake so early to get to school. I had to be at school by 3:00...-___- LOOOOONG bus ride to...Praerie High School...WAAAAY down south of here. It was a fun 3-4 hour bus ride...not really. HK and I sat near the emergency exit door which kept rattling and shaking because of a loose screw and nut that i could not jam in a way to stop it's racket. We just turned up our mp3 players and fell asleep. When we got there, colorguard was already on deck at 7:30. We got there 7:00. We hurried to get ready and had no time to practice...

We went through our sequence, confident that we did really well...but in the end. We did not place high enough to earn anything special...

After, we practiced Armed Drill Team. I got hurt by a firearm. No, I was not shot. The rifle was thrown at my head. SO i have a nice gash on my forehead...Like Harry Potter.

Bla bla bla....everything went on and on...and then awards ceremony. Our Armed Dual Exhibition Pair earned third place ^__^ but everything else Beamer competed in we lucked out on. Sad...our last competition of the year...and the last one for HK and I too....

And what made me the most depressed about this competition? Well, at these competitions, it's traditional to have a raffle ticket drawing for gift baskets with different themes; Air Force Basket, Movie Night Basket, Spa and Beauty Basket, etc. There was a really nice scrapbooking basket full of fun things and I really wanted to get it for Annie, so I bought 24 tickets, one dollar each. I thought to myself, I might WIN! So I'm out there on the gym floor in formation with my flag...hahaha....pulling out a long chain of tickets. When they get to the last basket, which was the scrapbooking one....i was waiting for my number to be called out. And...it didn't. *loooooong and deeeeep siiiiigh* I failed. T__T at least i have a string of tickets to give to Annie to show how unlucky of a boyfriend she has. At least i'm lucky enough to have her, hehe.

Anyways...now that competitions are all over...a little stress eased off i guess. :)

My toes hurts from vvn. There was nobody there. sad. BUT we're having a Christmas party tomorrow! again, sad. No idea what we'll do for those odd hours that we're there. My master wants us to sing Silent Night while holding flashlights in a circle...

OH! and on the drive home, going through the Port of Tacoma, there were a pair of stupid racers...They came RIGHT behind me and swerved into the other lane...and I was already going 60 so they must have been topping out at 90-100mph...jeez. But i've got to admit, their cars were pretty...How would my car look like with a spoiler on it? :D

The holidays can sometimes be so very depressing. I wish I had more presents to preoccupy myself with. hint hint* Hope everyone got what they wanted. But don't be too disappointed? - people put a lot of thought into giving their gifts. Sometimes things don't turn out the way they should BUT that's only because of circumstance, chance, and bad luck. sigh. It's all good though.

Change of topic: I should learn to shut my mouth and write in my journal. Not this journal but my actual one....yeah. Thanks for the journal, I really like it. I'm putting it to good use.
